QACC’s Employment Expo is the first of its kind for the African community. To me, the event was very successful in that it was very well attended, with over 60 young people and community leaders and provided young people with an opportunity to network with employers and engage in a Q&A session with them.
As one of the organisers of the event, my role on the day included making sure the day ran smoothly, facilitating the day’s proceedings and that the special guests and employers were well looked after and welcome.
As a facilitator, I enjoyed hearing employers and young people engage each other during the Q&A session. Listening to the panellists’ answers to questions about discrimination, equality in the workplace and access to employment and training opportunities was something I found very valuable and insightful.
For me, the expo, had great outcomes for African young people. Young people had the opportunity to hear what employers were looking for and through networking; they were able to develop connections with employers. These connections resulted in employment for one young person, with the potential to obtain similar outcomes as we make progress with our MYVP journey.
